January 2006 EAST COAST BASS ANGLERS
On January 21st, 2006 East Coast Bass Anglers fished their first Tournament for this year.My partners and I headed for Tin House Cove and upon arrival went way back in the brush. Using only the Trolling motor, we proceeded through a small trail back to the water that was gin clear. Beds were all over the place but most of them were old. We worked the area and my partner Bob Haarer hooked our first Keeper fish. Upon working the fish to the boat, I netted it and put it in the live well. Next cast I got one and it looked like a twin to the one Bob had just caught. We thought we had hit the gold mine but that was it for about an hour when Bob hooked another.
While he was getting his fish to the boat, I hooked one and we had doubles on. Both fish in the boat, we fished on around a lot of grass and stick ups that were just under the surface. Bob hooked into his third fish but it was short. Then I got another and so did Bob. We now had 3 each in the live wells. I hooked another that when she jumped, looked to be about 2 to 2 1/2 pounds. She headed for the sticks and tangled up in them and I was not able to get her out and to the boat. Bob hooked another but lost it. A little while later, I hooked another that looked like a pretty good fish but it went the same way as the last. Tangle up in the sticks and get off. Well, I guess that's why some of them grow up to be big fish. Smarter and wiser than those that get caught. We ended the day with 3 each in the live well.
Standings for the top six are as follows:
- 1st Place Ed Owens - 9.64 points.
- 2nd Place Rick Sasina - 9.11 points
- 3rd Place Ken Hall with - 7.75 points
- 4th Place John Anthony - 7.07 points
- 5th Place Leroy Bauer - 6.33 points and Carl Lewis with 6.32 points.
Winners for this Tournament.
- 1st Place Ed Owens and Mike Schlueter - 9.96 pounds
- 2nd Place Rick Sasina and Chuck Berger - 7.35 pounds
- 3rd Place Ken Hall and Chuck Smith - 7.18 pounds
Ken had big fish for the tournament which was 1.96 pounds. Only two Anglers had a five fish limit. Two other anglers had to be towed back to the ramp due to engine failure which made this tournament last longer than normal. Weigh in was completed about 4:30. Normally weigh in is completed by 3:20 to 3:25. Well, next month will be a better month, weather is warming up and fish are becoming more active. See ya on the water. Tight Lines
