Leroy with Tourney Big Bass at 5.10 pounds.
East Coast Bass Anglers launched the ninth tournament of the year out of Okeetanie on September 18th at first safe light. There was another tournament launching out of the same ramp but luckily all went well and we all blasted off into the sunrise. All boats headed out to the main lake to start their day, some headed south towards Harney Pond, while some headed north to go play on Grassy.
Weigh in was at 3pm and almost everyone weighed in at limit. This was our highest weight tournament of the year for the club with 103.91 lbs in total, as well as some of the closest weights amongst the individual anglers. In the end the team of Leroy Bauer and Floyd Marshall ended up winning the tournament with 23.50 lbs.
Leroy also had the Big Bass of the tourney with a nice fish that weighed in at 5.10 lbs. In second was the team of Hunter Broggi and Felix Morales. They got in to a late bite and almost doubled their weight in the last hour of the tournament weighing in 22.45 pounds. Proof to the saying that you should never give up, and never surrender! In third was the team of Alex Pappas and Dean Baldwin, they found most of their fish up shallow and further south.
Most club members ended up weighing in at right around 12 lbs. The heaviest stringer of the tourney was weighed in by OUZO Baits Pro Staffer Mark Lundgren with 13.26 lbs. He reported catching quite a few fish on traps in deeper water but also had a few key bites on a black/blue tip 5” Ouzee from Ouzo Baits. (Wonder where he got that!)
This was our best tournament of the year in both overall club weight, as well as the number of limits weighed in. Further proof that Lake Okeechobee is coming back in a BIG way! As the summer ends and the water temps start to cool it should only continue to get better!
East Coast Bass Anglers would like to extend a big “Thank You” to M&M Marine in Fort Pierce for doing such a great job on the club members boats! If you are in need of a great, trustworthy, and reasonable shop to work on your boat give Marty at M&M a call(772)464-6833, they have definitely helped us out a lot!
If you’re heading out to Okeechobee and need the latest in tackle and information be sure to stop at Okeechobee Fishing Headquarters and talk to Koby Kreiger or Capt. Mike Krause. They are always willing to point people in the right direction and help people learn the lake.
Next tournament is on Lake Istokpoga on Oct 16th. This tournament is in preparation for the Florida Bass Federation State Championship which will be fishing the end of Oct. Good luck to all anglers who fish this tournament. See ya at the ramp and tight lines.
